Curvy is the new black and it’s about time too! Fashion is finally realising that a model-like figure is not a realistic body type. It’s refreshing to see the rise of plus-size models and popularity of celebrities like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian who are famous for their curves and who are not afraid to show off their body even though they might not be super skinny. These style tips and tricks will help you enhance your figure in the best way.
1. Don’t Be Afraid Of Colour
Black is always seen as a slimming colour but adding a pop of colour to your outfit creates interest and can be used to highlight your best areas.
Colour blocking, print blocking and seam details such as darts are great for creating a silhouette and giving shape to your body.
2. Know Your Fabrics
If you have curves you need to find high-quality fabrics that contour creases and hug your figure, as these will make you look more streamlined. Scuba, stretch crepe and double-faced viscose are great choices. Bulky fabrics such as velvet and heavy wool can appear shapeless. For areas of concern avoid high sheen fabrics, which will attract the light and can sometimes make you appear bigger, not to mention the shine will draw the eye here so instead opt for matte fabrics to play down these areas.
3. Find A Great Tailor
Tailoring your clothing can have a huge impact on the way it fits. It can be the difference between an outfit looking frumpy and boxy or totally put together and flattering.
4. Accentuate Your Waist
Cinching your clothes in at the waist can make your silhouette more defined. Basically, belts are your best friends. Adding a belt is an easy way to make your outfit more polished and because it enhances the smallest part of your body it can make you look slimmer and your curves more defined, and who doesn’t want that?
5. Skirt Length
Hemlines should finish above or below the knee, as it will make your legs look slimmer and longer. The general rule for creating a more flattering silhouette is to opt for a hemline that hits the spot where your legs start becoming slimmer.
6. Balance Your Shapes
Feminine clothes that enhance the hourglass shape are always flattering. Combining the right silhouettes is crucial. If you are going for a sexy pencil skirt then pair it back with a looser top. Similarly, if you are wearing a slim fitting tee or crop style top then add volume to the bottom half with a fuller skirt. If you have a large bust then scoop, boat and V-neck lines are more flattering then round or high necks.
7. Keep It Simple
Don’t overdo things; your clothes should be sleek and simple with no extra frills or ruffles, as this will only add more volume to your figure. When it comes to prints don’t let the print wear you, instead opt for basic prints with vertical lines to elongate the figure.
8. Embrace Shapewear
You need a good foundation so always make sure you have the proper undergarments. Seamless lingerie will mean you avoid unsightly lines and will make your body look smoother. Spanx is great for reducing and enhancing all the right parts without leaving any lines and the right bra can make a world of difference to your décolletage.
9. Wear Your Size
Hiding your curves under oversized and baggy clothes will only make you look bigger than you really are, whilst clothes that are too small will be unflattering. By embracing your curves and wearing the perfect size you will find that your clothes are more flattering and will show off your feminine shape.
10. Love Your Curves
Know your body shape and be confident in what you are wearing. If you love your arms then show them off in a sleeveless style or if you hate your thighs cover them with a midi skirt. Wear clothes that accentuate the areas of your body that you love and hide the areas you don’t and that makes you feel good.
