With so many fashion events happening around the world in February, it can be hard to keep up with what has just happened on the runways. Through the street style of New York, we captured the sparks of several new trends, some of which are crowd favorites and others that we haven’t seen for years but have been given a fresh breath of life. From downtown Soho to the Upper East Side, here are five of the biggest trends we spotted at New York Fashion Week FW24.
1. Red Accessories
For those who are looking for a fresh way to spice up your outfit this winter, go for red accessories. Be it cherry red, deep crimson, or wine, there are ways to incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe. One of the popular ways we’ve spotted them this season is in the form of stockings and tights – a la Blair Waldorf. The best way to wear these is with a pair of matching red shoes – they can be flats or heels, but they should ideally match the same tone as your legs, giving the illusion of mile-long limbs. You shouldn’t restrict your red to just the feet, either – handbags, headbands, and sunglasses offer a subtle yet punchy twist to your ensemble without appearing too trendy. Stick to neutral and primary shades when working with this bright hue – gray, cream, and white work perfectly, as do blue, mint green, and black.

2. Mob Wife Aesthetic
You have likely seen it all over TikTok, and we’re totally jumping on board the Mob Wife train. Characterized by mob wife icons like Carmela Soprano of The Sopranos and Ginger from Casino, the entire aesthetic is the blatant parading of wealth and fortune (though they acquired such luxuries through questionable means). It is about all things opulent and glamorous, such as oversized fur coats, figure-hugging black dresses, knee boots, chunky gold jewelry either with a religious or round pendant or a pair of large earrings, and vintage rectangle sunglasses. Of course, no mob wife look is compete without animal print, so try and keep an eye out for a wild print to add to your collection. And if you think your look is teetering into tacky territory, you’re on the right path.

3. Metallics
Living in a world where technology moves faster than the speed of light, it comes as no surprise that metallics are one of the biggest trends this season. Fuelled with inspiration from the Y2K aesthetic, this year we are taking things up a notch by incorporating silver and gold garments into the mix, not just accessories. We can’t stop thinking about silver faux leather trousers, a gold sprayed jacket, or a slinky metallic skirt, all of which can be added with casual or formal pieces to create a complex and tasteful look, depending on the occasion. If you prefer subtle finishes to an outfit, such as a monochrome or color-blocking ensemble, we suggest incorporating a statement handbag or pair of boots – they’ll provide enough oomph to turn heads and keep them coming back for more.

4. Hot Pink
If you’re still loving the Barbie aesthetic and all things pink, you’re in luck. We’re seeing no shortages of this bright shade this season, but we noticed it getting interpreted in fresh and unexpected ways. Rather than just wearing a hot pink dress, why not opt for something that explores texture, a striking silhouette, or inventive cut-outs? Another popular form of fuschia we saw was in matching sets, such as a skirt and blazer, pants and vest, or even a simple T-shirt and shorts – they create unity in both halves of your frame, leaving you to experiment with funky accessories and new colors. Just because the shade has us in an endless chokehold doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to breathe new life into it – play around and have fun with it!

5. Fringing Trend
One of the easiest ways to make a simple outfit appear more daring is by making your clothing choices a little more dicey – through the form of fringe, that is. This simple yet effective element is an easy way to add flair to your ensemble, and doesn’t mean you have to deviate from what makes you comfortable. For instance, if you rely on a uniform of strictly black, wearing a leather-stripped skirt can take you to the next level – simply add a pair of knee boots, a turtleneck or sweater, and a long coat for the perfect cold-day activities. And for the days when you just want to traipse around in tracksuit pants? Have no fear – throwing on a simple cardigan or jacket emblazoned with fringing creates movement and texture, the perfect elements required to create an interesting outfit.
