Classic 90s and 80s trends are making a comeback on the street style scene, spotted on all the chicest women attending the European Autumn/Winter shows. Of course, as fashion goes, it’s an updated, reinvented take on the trends of the past to keep things chic and cool. Flares are reworked in sleek black fabrics, bandanas are worn femininely tied around the neck, and frayed denim is perfectly partnered with stylish heels. Hoodies are worn under jackets, also adding to the grunge vibe radiating from the street style set, while multi-coloured fur, folk art jackets and statement stripes add a pop of fun into the mix with bold colours and patterns. Bring this mix of 90s meets modern into your own wardrobe with a little inspiration from our top seven street style trends from Autumn/Winter 2016 fashion weeks.
1. Flares
Flares have been gradually making their way back in to the wardrobes of fashion’s elite, and this season is no exception. First introduced to fashion in the ’70s, flares had another major moment in the late ’90s, and are now back again in 2016. Also known as bell-bottoms, flares are a flattering and feminine shape which sit tight at the thighs and knees and flare outwards towards the feet. Today’s updated versions appear in sleek, black cotton styles with added stretch for a polished look. Best paired with heels to elongate the legs, flares look perfect at or below ankle length. Complete styling with a fitted shirt on top and a slim, thigh-length coat.

2. Bandanas
Another throw-back to the ’90s, the humble bandana has made an unexpected return. Worn chicly around the neck, the bandana is the latest way to finish off an outfit in style. Tied up high, like the silk scarves of flight attendants, bandana also resembles an updated version of this season’s much-loved ribbon chokers. Best worn in a bold colour with a simple yet detailed pattern, bandanas can be easily paired with any outfit. Keep a variety in your closet this autumn and simply pick out a matching or complimentary colour to go with your outfit when it’s in need of some extra style points.

3. Multi-Coloured Faux Fur
The coloured faux fur designs seen on the runway at this season’s shows were also mimicked off the runway. Street style experts took the look a step further however, with introduction of multi-coloured fur. Bold splashes of clashing colours, stripes and even multi-hued, fur flowers were all spotted on the streets of Paris and Milan. Unmissable, with their incredible colour, size and texture, these jackets and coats spelled out fun mixed with some serious attitude. If you’re feeling a little daring try this look for yourself. Simply pair with basic block colours and straight-leg pants or jeans. Then match the colour of your bag to one of the colours of your coat and you’re ready to go.

4. Folk Art Vests and Jackets
Add some rich colours and decorative patterns to your wardrobe this season with folk-art inspired designs. Swirling shapes, detailed embroidery, florals, and culturally-inspired motifs, all turned heads on the streets outside the recent Autumn/Winter 16 runways. With hues reminiscent of scenic landscapes, this trend brought art and fashion together in an obvious yet humble way. Featured predominantly on standout jackets and vests, folk art was paired with modern design and simple silhouettes. Like multi-coloured fur, this trend will say everything your outfit needs in one garment, so keep things simple with a pair of jeans.

5. Frayed Denim
Every cool girl was wearing frayed denim on the streets of Europe this fashion month. Looking perfectly undone, this trend easily injects a little ’90s grunge and attitude into any outfit. And the best part is that it doesn’t have to cost you a cent. Give your jeans a D.I.Y. makeover and cut the hems off an old pair for an instant style update. Then simply leave them frayed and raw on the edge for a “too cool to care” look. The perfect length is chopped at the ankle and the perfect partner is black, leather boots. Of course if you would prefer a brand new pair, there’s plenty of stylish options to buy too. Whether you prefer skinny-legs, straights, or even wide-legs, there’s frayed denim in a style to suit you.

6. Statement Stripes
Vertical, horizontal or diagonal, it doesn’t matter, as long as your stripes are loud and making a statement! Unmissable and bold, statement stripes stalked the streets outside this season’s Paris and Milan shows. Stripes are always popular but they haven’t been this fun in a while. Whether they were black, red, white, blue, pink or green, they all stood out and covered entire garments. Thick and almost flag-worthy, they dominated street style looks from head to toe. Wear your own statement stripes on a coat, jacket or dress and pair with a simple, slim silhouette and minimal accessories.

7. Hoodies Under Jackets
Full of attitude and practical, this street style trend will keep you warm and chic at the same time. Wearing a hoodie under a jacket is this season’s answer to the question of dressing stylishly disheveled. Light and comfortable, cotton hoodies were worn under all variety of dense outerwear in Milan and Paris. With hoods up, sunglasses on and hair messily, the fashion pack looked like they had a stylish secret to hide. Classically worn with leather, layered hoodies also look great with the added texture of fur, wool or shearling coats. Try this look paired with frayed denim for the ultimate 90’s grunge style.
