It was a mild Friday night that saw the retail precinct of the Melbourne CBD grind to a halt to celebrate one of this city’s favourite enterprise……..FASHION !
In spectacular style and true to form, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week opened and this year unlike previous incarnations the grand spectacle was brought to all Melbourne consumers, rather then the typical few that are lucky enough to usually score invites.
Little Bourke St, between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets was shut to all motor access as a makeshift runway was created, lined by a series of floral bedecked arches. From vantage view points including the curb and the glassed bridges that traverse retail giants David Jones, Myer and brand new Mecca of Retail attractions, Emporium Melbourne, crowds with eagerness peered at the grand proceedings. Joining them in the front pews were many from the media fold and ‘bloggorsphere’, including our own gilded Dasha and Colin Gold of TheTrendspotter, selected as official MSFW Influencers. Throughout the week, Dasha and Colin will provide our esteemed TheTrendspotter followers with program highlights and commentary of looks from the runways so stay tuned.
Formalities included speeches from Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Susan Riley and CEO of Emporium Melbourne, Steve Edgerton before MSFW ambassador, Jess Hart, rang the city’s bell to official open the week’s festivities.
From beyond the white and also floral bedecked staged, emerged twenty models wearing the latest Spring/Summer offerings from a coterie of Australia’s leading designers and fashion labels including; Manning Cartell, Dion Lee, Mimco, Calibre and Sass and Bide. Stylist for the opening runway, Emily Ward, cleverly enhancing the spectacular garments with corsages, waistbands and headdresses all created from an abundance of multi- hued natural flowers. A move that struck a cord with the appreciative audience and giving many congregated ideas for self-styling for impending Spring Racing Carnival outings.
Runway over, Melbourne’s fashion loving inhabitants were then invited to participate in the grandest MSFW activation ever conceived…….SHOP-HOP.
SHOP-HOP involved retailers right across the CBD, open their arms to consumers with many throwing soirees within the confines of their own premises. Emporium Melbourne, echoing its Baz Luhrmann orchestrated own opening extravaganza, invited its retailers to do the same with bands, disc-jockeys and other entertainment peppered through the building to enhance the celebratory mood. Patrons in particular enjoying the clouds if gold streamers that fell like glittering confetti from up high. VIPs were feted in a private enclave where champagne and canapés, as well as the obligatory greetings and air kisses, flowed late into the night.
MSFW runs from 30th August till 7th September.
