On a fine Melbourne evening, at the majestic Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, much admired and sought after Melbourne premium label Kookai took us on a journey to New York as they launched their Autumn-Winter 2014 collection.
The mood a glamorous winter’s day in the city that never sleeps, where it’s glamorous inhabitants and their inimitable style were translated for our Australian taste by the genius Danielle Vagner, founder and head designer at Kookai, and her expert team.
As the lights glistened over the winding catwalk, a monochrome hut, screen printed with iconic images of the New York cityscape lit up from which emerged models including international sensation Samantha Harris in Vagner’s vision for Kookai this season.
The collection started predominantly monochromatic; crisp whites, blacks, digital prints interspersed with garments in vivid blood orange. Vagners silhouettes for this season were chic and simple featuring body hugging dresses, skirts and tops. The continuing demand for midriff corset and tops was still observed as well a new development in the Kookai range, flip skirts with a playful flirty hemline.
The collection continued with an offering in multi-hued digital print in vivid gelati shades followed by more red, and a superb offering in oversized red floral print over a black base.
Equally impressive and surely to be a big hit, Kookai’s jackets and coats which came in many lengths. Each designed to show off the wearers figures and contours and surely to render the wearer chic and confidant in her appearance. One of the highlights of the collection being a dinner jacket with intricate beading at the crux of the sleeve.
In all, the collection was chic and glamorous yet flirty and playful and surely will appeal to a broad audience.
Guests at the event composed of well known Melbourne identities, socialites, celebrities, models, media and connoisseurs of ‘La Dolce Vita’ as well as the beautiful and well heeled feted Vagner and the Kookai team for the brilliance of their collection.
Endless sipping on Champagne Laurent-Perrier and partaking of delicious morsels by caterers Peter Rowland led to a mood that was festive, ebullient and highly congratulatory of the hosts.
Indeed it definitely seems that Vagner and her Kookai team had magically transported us to a ‘state of mind’ that was resoundingly New York.
