We all have at least one denim item in our wardrobe, and although it may be associated with a relaxed look, denim can be worn for many occasions. Here is a list of must-have denim items this season and our top styling tips to refresh your look.
1. Cropped Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans are making the rounds again this season. The beauty of this style is that you can pair it with a great set of heels and convert your style from “school drop off” to an evening out. A tailored jacket will also ensure your look isn’t dowdy but is rather polished and refined. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit simple and classic. If you have a curvy figure, accentuate your waist. When pairing your jeans with a crop jacket, opt for darker coloured denim. If you have a petite body built, don’t cuff your jeans at the ankle to avoid creating an illusion of shorter legs
2. Distressed Denim
Designers Natalia Altewai and Randa Saome showcased frayed denim on the catwalk of their 2016 Spring Summer collection in Stockholm Fashion Week. It’s a modern take on the usual distressed denim jeans or skirt by adding an asymmetrical element. There are a few things that must be remembered to avoid getting this style wrong. Don’t over accessorise. It can make your outfit look messy and take away from the coolness you’re trying to portray. Add a statement necklace, sweater and heels for a classy look and keep it simple for something a little more casual. A white sneaker and tucked in shirt can also work well especially when partnered with skinny leg jeans.
3. Denim Overall
Making it’s way back to the scene is the denim overall. Once reserved for cute toddlers in pigtails has now taken its place as a season must have for grown folks. For a cool casual style, wear an espadrille or sneaker and well-fitted shirt or sweater underneath. They also present as the perfect festival outfit when worn with a crop top and gladiator sandal. To ensure you avoid the Farmer Joe look, make sure your overalls fit well and stay true to size.
4. Denim on Denim
Traditionally the denim on denim has been a big no-no when it comes to fashion, think Brittany Speares and JT at the MTV Awards. It’s emergence on the street, a-la Rihanna and Beyonce, has seen a trend shift in its direction. Don’t stay with the same shade of denim and mix it up a little with colour and materials. Try a maroon jacket or tan scarf to balance out an all denim look. Also, the distressed jeans paired with a lighter denim shirt will compliment each other without looking too heavy. Another way to double up is to try accessorising in denim with a denim shoe or bag such as Burberry’s denim bowling bag.
5. Denim Jacket
Fendi showed leather trimmed jackets and hooded coats at their 2016 Resort show. This unique take on the everyday denim jacket shows that you can wear it with just about everything. For something a little different, try a white denim jacket as a great item to incorporate the denim on denim look and paired with shorts, skirts or pants.
