Just in case you hadn’t heard, minimalism is out, and excess is in. Well, that’s what we hear from the streets of Paris Fashion Week anyway. Simple fabrics, neutral block colours and streamlined silhouettes were all shunned this week with women favouring lavish looks instead. With barely a wardrobe basic in sight (if you don’t count the oversized business shirts borrowed from boyfriends’ wardrobes), outfits featuring fashion on fashion on fashion quickly became the norm. Decadent and feminine as it was, the look was also decidedly messy, like unravelled elegance. Hems were frayed, shapes were oversized and asymmetrical, colours and patterns were thrown together haphazardly, and layering seemed to follow no rules. Embellishment and decorative details brought the look back from the streets and into the world of high fashion. Like abstract art, the week featured an array of beading, sequins, applique, patches, badges, feathers, fur, florals, velvet, zips, pins and more. It was almost as if someone had broken into the atelier “craft” cupboard and doled out their bounty generously. But whether a fashion-loving thief was at work or not, it can be agreed that the week sure did bring a whole lot of fun back into the world of street style.
