Amsterdam is a place that’s renowned for its coffeeshops. In fact, the city boasts a couple hundred of them within its borders. But, while these establishments are called “coffeeshops”, they’re certainly selling more than just caffeine. So, if you’re in the mood for a bit of cannabis and are 18 or over, Amsterdam is the place to go. The only question is which of these many venues to visit. As you clearly can’t attend them all in one trip and don’t want to miss out on the best, we’ve rounded up a list of the city’s must-visit coffeeshops. Now you can mellow out knowing that you’ve hit up Amsterdam’s premier premises for relaxing and indulging.
1. The Bulldog
The Bulldog is one of the most famous Amsterdam coffee shops, and rightfully so. The Bulldog No. 90, which launched in 1975, was the city’s first coffee shop and set the benchmark for those that followed. Today, The Bulldog boasts five locations and a hotel in Amsterdam, as well as locations in Canada and a merchandising line. While each shop has charm, nothing beats the original, which was once a sex-shop.

2. Green House
Green House, which now boasts four locations, has won over 30 High Times Cannabis Cups and delivers some of the best cannabis in Amsterdam. This impressive feat makes it well worth a visit or two will you’re in the city, so make sure you get down there. Don’t be surprised if you see a celebrity while you’re there either. The various Green House locations are often visited by the rich and famous.

3. Grey Area
Not only is Grey Area a seriously popular coffee shop, but it’s also an award-winning venue. While it may be small and only fit around 16 patrons, this great shop is well worth a visit when you’re in town. The atmosphere is relaxing and happy, making it a perfect place to sit back and enjoy what’s on the menu. With such a vibe, it’s no wonder that Grey Area is a favourite venue for locals, tourists, and even travelling celebrities.

4. Original Dampkring
The Dampkring is a coffee shop that stands out from the pack. As well as serving good drinks and good weed, this unforgettable venue is also beloved for its spacious feel and incredible interiors. The welcoming establishment is also world-famous thanks to the crew from Ocean’s 12, who spent time there while shooting for the film in Amsterdam.

5. Barney’s Coffee Shop
Barney’s is the winner of multiple High Times Cup awards, so you know it’s an excellent place to visit. Although the location is a classic that’s been around for more than 20 years, Barney’s has an original and eclectic aesthetic, which makes it a cool space for chilling out. The staff are also highly welcoming and knowledgeable while the clientele is friendly and relaxed. On top of that, the shop is conveniently located and just a short walk from Amsterdam Central Station.

It may be situated off the main tourist routes, but Amnesia is spot well worth visiting. The coffee shop is one of the finest in the city and, thanks to its scenic location, tends to be a little cooler and calmer than other venues. A favourite amongst locals, Amnesia is beloved for its excellent atmosphere and seriously tasty menu items.

Many tourists who have been in search of Amsterdam’s ultimate coffee shop experience have ended up at Abraxas. Everything about the renowned hotspot is ideal for achieving an unforgettably good high. Tucked away down an alley, Abraxas boasts a fantastic fantasy-inspired atmosphere and an incredible selection of cannabis strains.

Siberie is the perfect place to sit back and relax. The friendly and mellow coffee shop sits canal side on Brouwersgracht and is a favourite of locals and tourists alike. With internet access and board games as well as regular horoscope readings, open mic nights, exhibitions, and DJs on weekends, you’ll easily be able to spend an afternoon, evening or whole day at this must-visit venue. Just don’t forget to order a coffee or tea as Siberie takes its beverage list as seriously as its excellent cannabis menu.

9. Smoke Palace
Founded in 1990, Smoke Palace is one of the oldest coffee shops in Amsterdam, and it’s also one of the best. Whether you’re visiting the city in summer or winter, you’ll always be able to enjoy a good joint and cup of coffee here. Inside, the venue is cosy and comfortable with a warm atmosphere while outside, it’s open and fresh with a fun feeling.

Whether you’re a connoisseur of cannabis or a first-timer, 420 Cafe is a great place to go in Amsterdam. The impressive venue provides patrons with the kind of classic coffee shop experience for which the city is known. Head there during your stay in Amsterdam, and you’re sure to find a fantastic venue that’s the perfect environment for getting high and eating lots of goodies. 420 Cafe is also conveniently located in the heart of the city, which makes it easy to get to.

11. The Dolphins
The decor may be a little bold, but The Dolphins is a fun and fantastic coffee shop to visit. Anyone looking for a friendly and comfortable place to spend a lazy afternoon is certain to love this venue. As well as an eye-catching underwater theme, The Dolphins also boasts comfortable couches, free Wi-Fi, and a good selection of high-class weed and hash.

12. 1e Hulp
1e Hulp is a must-visit Amsterdam coffee shop for tourists, locals, and lovers of pot alike. The venue is decked out in a Middle-Eastern themed decor and features a rich and inviting aesthetic. This exotic flair also makes it a killer location for indulging in cannabis. Luckily, 1e Hulp has a superb menu with many great strains.

When it comes to Amsterdam coffee shops, Katsu is one to know. The cool and quirky venue is located on a pedestrian street and features a brightly painted exterior. The coffee shop’s interior, on the other hand, is decidedly more homely with potted plants, dim lighting, and a cosy lounge feel. Katsu’s cannabis selection is also highly recommended, making it an all-around fantastic venue.

Smokey is a cool coffee shop and juice bar rolled into one. The establishment, which you can find at Rembrandtplein, can seat 150 people and is perfect for large groups of tourists who are looking to relax. Head there after a long day of sight-seeing to unwind and indulge in the vast offerings of marijuana, hashish, muffins, coffee, tea, and juice.

Baba is undoubtedly one of the coolest coffee shops in Amsterdam. Although the establishment moved to a new location last year, its Eastern theme and top draw remained unchanged. So, if you want to partake in a little indulgence while being surrounded by incredible statues of deities and the like, Baba is the place to go.
