From the passing of the knitwear queen to the beginning of Tyra Banks’ new career, these are the top international fashion stories of the week.
Tyra Banks to Teach at Stanford Business School
Supermodel and former America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) host, Tyra Banks, has now been tapped to teach a class at Stanford Business School. The media and beauty mogul will serve as a guest lecturer for the class, which teaches students about personal branding. Banks, who has much experience in managing her own high-profile personal brand, will share her knowledge with students on how to build and maintain their personal brands.
Banks’ will teach the class, titled “Project You: Building and Extending your Personal Brand”, for two weeks next May. The first assignment for the lucky students undertaking the class will be to create a short video introducing themselves and their vision/goals for their individual brands.
Much like her hosting style on ANTM, Banks’ says that she will be engaging and fun yet firm when teaching at Standford. The charismatic model also plans to keep students off their phones while she’s lecturing, unless it’s to tweet something that she said.

Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke Star in Unretouched Lingerie Campaign
Famed writer and actress, Lena Dunham has starred in a new, unretouched, lingerie campaign alongside fellow actress, Jemima Kirke. Dunham and Kirke, who co-star in the TV series Girls, took part in the “body positive” campaign, posing for New Zealand brand Lonely. The images, which feature both ladies in delicate lace lingerie, are part of the brand’s ‘Lonely Girls’ series. Completely unretouched, the series documents a range of women without the aid of Photoshop.
“Instead of being objectified, the women who participate in these campaigns—in this case, Lena and Jemima—are empowered and exhibit real beauty that will hopefully help women everywhere feel a little more liberated,” the lingerie brand said.
Dunham took her own stand against retouching earlier this year, vowing to put an end to Photoshopped images of herself.

Knitwear Queen Sonia Rykiel Dies at 86
‘The Queen of Knitwear’, Sonia Rykiel, has passed away this week at the age of 86. Her death, which was confirmed by her daughter, Nathalie, is said to be a result of Parkinson’s disease. Rykiel had been battling the disease for many years, revealing her condition to the public in 2012 through a book that she wrote. Titled “N’Oubliez Pas Que Je Joue” (Don’t Forget It’s a Game), the publication was co-authored by Judith Perrignon.
Rykiel, who was a famed French designer, was first heralded as ‘The Queen of Knitwear’ after launching her line in the 1960s. Although Rykiel had not served as artistic director of her eponymous brand for some time, she remained close to the label, serving as honorary president. Julie de Libran currently helms the Sonia Rykiel label.
