The Maticevski creative force has a spellbinding and other-worldly charm that transfixes anyone lucky enough to discover it – incalculable but measured only in admiration. His Fall 15 runway collection is nothing less than a distilment of passion that renders immediate intoxication, even from the smallest of doses.
A liquid gloss stage set against a white washed wall of 70’s breeze bricks completes the setting for the main act. With a soundscape of nature overlaid, an assembly of models march out the first looks, only in white to magnify the Maticevski mastery of silhouette. The control of drape is harnessed with technical precision to form shapes that have nostalgic qualities but with modern take. Soft volumes are manipulated and ruched into gathers and ruffles to add sculptural definition. Complex constructions in mesh and Neoprene are the designer’s hallmark and this season metallic coatings and interwoven gold fabrics are added for heightened drama. Playful aspects such as polka dots and colourful all-over embroidery in a palette of pink, baby blue and white evoke a sense history only to be juxtaposed, in parts, by a futuristic theme. ‘It wasn’t really any one thing, it was trying to bring different elements together that might seem odd on paper’ says Maticevski on the topic of inspiration.
Whether it’s looking forward or has its heart in the past, his latest work transcends the Earthly bounds of women’s ready-to-wear and is propelled light years ahead and beyond.
